How Student Loan Repayments Work
You repay 9% of income above your plan's threshold (6% for postgraduate loans). Repayments are taken automatically through PAYE alongside tax and NI. They pause automatically if your income drops below the threshold.
2026/27 Thresholds
- Plan 1: ยฃ26,900 โ written off 25 years after first repayment due (or age 65)
- Plan 2: ยฃ28,470 โ written off 30 years after graduation
- Plan 4 (Scotland): ยฃ33,795 โ 30 years
- Plan 5: ยฃ25,000 โ 40 years
- Postgraduate: ยฃ21,000 at 6% โ 30 years
Should You Overpay?
For most graduates on Plan 2 or 5, the answer is usually no โ many will never repay the full balance before write-off, making voluntary overpayments money lost. Overpaying only makes sense for high earners certain to clear the loan well before write-off. MoneySavingExpert's analysis on this is the gold standard reference.
