Tipping in the UK

UK tipping culture is more relaxed than the US. For restaurant table service, 10–12.5% is standard if a service charge hasn't already been added. Check your bill — many restaurants now add a discretionary 12.5% service charge automatically, in which case no extra tip is expected.

The Tipping Act 2024

Since October 2024, the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act requires employers to pass 100% of tips, gratuities and service charges to workers without deductions. This means tips you leave — whether cash or card — must now legally reach staff.

When Not to Tip

Tipping is not expected at pubs (counter service), fast food, or takeaways. For taxis, rounding up is appreciated but not required. Hairdressers commonly receive around 10%.
